Join the Walk Across Tennessee Program for Marshall County

Walk Across Tennessee Graphic

From Memphis to Mountain City,
let's Walk Across Tennessee!

Walk Across Tennessee is a team-based walking program for anyone and everyone. Beginning September 18th, teams of 6 are encouraged to cumulatively walk the equivalent of the length of Tennessee (about 500 miles) or more, over the course of eight weeks.

Team members do not have to walk together. Walk outside, walk on a treadmill, do physical activity equivalents - the choice is yours! The team who walks the farthest “across Tennessee” will win, but everyone who participates will take home a healthy habit – walking for fitness.

Challenge your friends, family, students, employees and colleagues to join a team and achieve the goal. Walk Across Tennessee for a healthier you and a healthier Marshall County!

Registration deadline: September 11th

Join Leadership Marshall Class of 2017-2018 Today

Leadership Marshall is a program initiated by the Tennessee Department of Economic Development as part of its Three Star Community Certification and has been conducted through the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce since 1996. Since the inception of the program, the volunteer coordinator has been Lynda Potts.

The purpose of the leadership class is two-fold. First, members are exposed to a vast wealth of information about the city, county, and state. Second, members are allowed to network with others who share a common interest in the community. The camaraderie has been both exciting and rewarding for all graduates.

Admission to the program is by application and payment of $150.00 to Leadership Marshall, delivered to the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce.

One nine-hour session per month for eight months will focus on information and tours that will benefit leaders and/or potential leaders. Included in the schedule will be an Orientation Day, History Day, Health Services Day, City Government Day, County Government Day, State Government Day, Education Day, and Industry Day. A three-hour graduation luncheon will be held after all eight sessions are completed.

Individually, each member is asked to attend or participate in at least four community meetings or programs, such as attending a City Council meeting, a Marshall County Board of Education meeting, a Lewisburg Planning and Zoning Committee meeting, or a production at the Dixie Theatre. A long list of possible activities will be included in the member notebooks which are given out at the first session.

A group project may be adopted by the group at the first session.  The Class of 2000-2001 launched Junior Leadership Marshall. Another class collected old photographs of Lewisburg and had them framed for the conference room at Columbia State Community College. Two groups raised money for projects involving the Rock Creek Walking Trail.  One group built the heli-pad for Air EVAC at the EMS site. Three years ago the class supervised improvements and additions to the Marshall County Library. Two classes have installed an historical marker at buildings around the Square.

The county and city mayors and various organization chairmen have been asked to appoint their board members and committees from the list of Leadership Marshall graduates. We currently have many graduates serving in places of decision.

Each class is limited in membership. Applications are taken year round at the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce. Presently, the classes are formed as the applications come to the Chamber on a first come first served basis. If you would like to participate in the next class, email Lynda Potts Lpotts@vallnet.com , phone the Chamber at 359-3863 to secure an application or download an application here.

United Lights Next Generation Fiber Ring in Middle TN

United recently completed construction on a fiber ring connecting historically underserved markets in the lower portion of Middle Tennessee to its existing fiber backbone in Nashville, Huntsville, and Murfreesboro.  The new fiber route, adds almost 130 miles of fiber, and achieves a critical milestone under United’s Middle Tennessee Connectivity initiative launched late last year.   “We are delivering on our promise to offer Internet speeds of up to 1 Gigabit to interested businesses and critical community anchors throughout Middle Tennessee,” said United CEO, William Bradford.  United’s newly constructed fiber ring connects the major business districts of Chapel Hill, Lewisburg, Shelbyville, Tullahoma, Estill Springs, Decherd, and Winchester.  This ring will allow government agencies, utilities, and businesses in the region to connect locations in these markets to United’s core network through Nashville, Murfreesboro, and Huntsville, providing critical connections from each of these rural communities to several major metropolitan markets.

"I am extremely proud of what our engineering and construction teams have been able to accomplish in just a short time under this initiative," said Mr. Bradford.  "Our team plans to work directly with community and business leaders in these new areas to determine whether additional fiber construction is required based on the needs of each institution.  At United, we are laser focused on delivering faster speeds and dedicated service to our customers while driving economic development in the areas we serve by deploying fiber technology and high-speed broadband."

United Communications plans to continue to aggressively expand its network in underserved areas of Middle Tennessee.  Thanks to United’s recent acquisition of Athena Broadband in July, the upgraded fiber ring will also be able to support new fixed wireless expansion in the region.  The combination of fiber and fixed wireless technology will allow United to deliver high-speed Internet to more areas at a faster pace.  “We’ve got boots on the ground each day working to bridge the broadband divide in Middle Tennessee. Most of our employees live and work in these rural areas, and understand broadband is critical to the future growth and economic development plans of these communities.  We are proud to be able to meet the needs of these rural cities and towns that other providers may have long ignored or forgotten,” commented Bradford.

Residential customers who have interest in United Fiber service, can visit https://fiber.united.net and complete the online registration form.  Likewise, businesses can request service availability information by visiting www.united.net/services/business

  • Deliver faster internet to residential communities where there is a proven demand.
  • Educate the community about the potential benefits afforded by basic and advanced telecommunications services, including the potential for fostering distance learning, e-commerce, e-government, telemedicine, and overall economic development.

Tankersley Named August Instructor of the Month

Cookie Tankersley - South Central Tennessee Workforce Board Alliance
- Marshall County Adult Education - Lewisburg Office
Carolyn “Cookie” Tankersley is a highly skilled instructor who has taught mathematics for over 10 years. Always encouraging, she does not give up on her students until they earn their diploma. When students fail to attend classes, Tankersley contacts each one to encourage them to return. She establishes a positive relationship with all her students, so they know someone cares about their future.
One example of Tankersley’s relentless, genuine concern is when a student with regular class attendance was suddenly absent. After a brief search, she located the student in the county jail. Tankersley arranged for him to return to class upon his release. Once he returned to class, he successfully passed the HiSET.
Tankersley believes that teaching students is her ministry. She knows the lasting effect earning a diploma has on the students and their families. At times when a student’s motivation may begin to falter, Tankersley is there to keep them going. Every student is inspired by her caring nature.
Congrats to Cookie Tankersley,  August’s Instructor of the Month! LINK to ONLINE ARTICLE
