Leadership Week Comes to Marshall County

Lyn Stacey - CTE Director -

to the Gattis Leadership group.
Leadership development is a crucial component of a community's sustainability plan and this week Marshall County played host to three leadership groups developed in or with Marshall County.
Leadership Marshall is a program created and directed by Lynda Potts of Lewisburg and offers local residents the opportunity to take the course and learn about the community in which they live. At the end of the course, the class of students chooses and implements a community development project that has ranged from park benches for the Greenway to creating the Junior Leadership Marshall program.
Junior Leadership Marshall invites students from each of the three high schools in Marshall County to take part in a program similar to the adult version - Leadership Marshall.

Four years ago, Marshall County Leadership alumni and alumni from similar Leadership programs in surrounding counties developed a regional Leadership program called Gattis Regional Leadership. This program takes people who have graduated from their county leadership course and offers them the opportunity to learn more about the counties that surround their communities. Gattis Leadership began with six counties, but has grown to eleven counties in the region.
Last week, Marshall County hosted all three Leadership groups to tour Marshall County with Junior Leadership Marshall and Leadership Marshall taking an Industry Day tour. Gattis Leadership brought program participants from each of the counties in the region to Marshall County for a tour of the community and its assets, plans and issues it faces.

The students from each program were treated to presentations by local officials in Marshall County, local assets from the Library to the Spot Lowe Technology Center and tours of several local industries including Old Hickory Smokehouse, Southern Carton, CKNA and Lewisburg Printing.
Participants in the Junior Leadership Marshall and Leadership Marshall will continue to take tours of the community for History Day, Local Government Day, State Government Day and more.
The Gattis Leadership participants will continue to take tours of each of the counties in the program to learn what each has to offer and what each faces.

To join Junior Leadership Marshall, students must submit an application and their schools and be selected to participate by the Junior Leadership Marshall Board. To join the Leadership Marshall program, residents of Marshall County need simply to contact Lynda Potts and ask to take the next upcoming course. To join the Gattis Leadership program, anyone who graduates from Leadership Marshall can request to participate in the program and information and joining is provided upon graduation from Leadership Marshall.

For Seniority GM Employees- RFI’s must be turned in by February 2, 2015
WHAT IS THE APPRENTICESHIP PROCESS?
Skilled tradespeople at General Motors are highly trained men and women who build, operate and maintain our complex machinery and plant facilities. They use precision tools, instruments, and state-of-the-art methods to produce quality products. Skilled tradespeople are vital members of the movement toward high technology in industry today.
Their jobs require a wide range of knowledge, as well as maturity and independence of judgment.
The GM/UAW Spring Hill skilled trades include occupations of; Electrician, Stationary Engineer, Machine Repair, and Tool and Die Maker. Each trade is unique and important to the overall success of our operation and can be achieved by completing the Apprenticeship for the trade desired. To complete the apprenticeship requires 4 years of On the Job Training totaling (7328) hours plus College Related Classroom Courses totaling (576) hours. Courses consist of: Math, Science, Shop Drawing, Safety, and Computer software.
Development Dimensions International (DDI) plays a key role in assisting local plants with the actions of the Request for Information, Orientation and Testing Sessions, and Interview guidelines to ensure the efficiency, fairness and effectiveness of the Apprenticeship Program.
The apprenticeship process differs between GM/UAW Seniority Employees and Non-Seniority/Non-GM Employees.
Request for Apprenticeship Information: Seniority Employees fill out a Request for Apprenticeship Information (RFI) to receive an invitation to an Orientation Session and are guaranteed the opportunity to test.
Non-Seniority/Non-GM Applicants or External candidates must call to set up an appointment, to complete the Request for Apprenticeship Information application in person. The process is limited to 250 external applicants.
Non-Seniority/Non-GM Applicants are subject to a random selection process of up to one hundred (100) selected by the outside party DDI. Those selected in the random process shall receive an invitation to an Orientation Session. ORIENTATION SESSION: It is very important that you attend the Orientation Session. If you fail to attend the Orientation Session you will have to re-apply in the next cycle. At the Orientation Session, a presentation about the apprenticeship program is shown and time is provided for questions. A formal application, and sign up for testing date and time will be completed.
Testing: The apprentice test is divided into two sections. First is “Reading Prints and Drawings”. It will ask you to use drawings and charts to solve math problems much like apprentices use each day. The second part is the “Work Judgment, Style and Experience” and will ask you questions about your reaction to common work situations and your prior experience in actual work situations. The maximum points you can receive for testing is 36. Your test score will be the qualifier for advancing to an interview.
Interview: The interview is rigidly structured like the test. All applicants are asked the same basic questions, although trade-specific questions may vary. The Maximum points you can receive for the interview is 21.
Selection: After the interview, your name will be placed on a selection list using your total score as ranking. You will stay on that list for ten years or until placed into the apprenticeship program. If you have a change of address you must contact us so that we can update your contact information.
Non GM Candidates
The General Motors Spring Hill Apprentice Committee will be accepting Requests for
Information Apprentice applications. Given the fact that we are limited by the National
